Which Industries Need Arc Flash Clothing?

ARC (short for "Arc Rating") is a measure of the amount of thermal energy that can be transferred through a fabric, and it is used to assess the level of protection that clothing provides against electrical arc flashes. Clothing worn in industries where electric arcs are present must meet certain requirements to ensure that workers are protected from the hazards of electric arcs.

The requirements for ARC-rated clothing vary depending on the level of protection needed. For example, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires a minimum arc rating of 4 cal/cm2  (PPE category 1 for example clothing worn in general industry settings). In contrast, workers in the electric utility industry may need clothing with an arc rating of 40cal/cm2 or higher (PPE category 4).

Industries that require workers to wear ARC-rated clothing include those that deal with electrical power, such as electric utilities, power generation plants, rail workers and electrical contractors. Other industries that require ARC-rated clothing include those that work with combustible materials, such as petrochemical refineries and oil and gas drilling operations. Workers in these industries face a high risk of exposure to electrical arc flashes and must wear protective clothing to minimise the risk of injury.
